The experience

What to expect

Taghazout is all surf and salt air, which is exactly why this day works. You leave the village after breakfast and drive inland, away from the coast road, to a Berber house with a garden and a kitchen that smells of woodsmoke and cumin.

The garden comes first. You walk it with the cook, picking the herbs and vegetables that go into the pot and hearing what grows when. Then the cooking, tagine or couscous, done by hand. The cook shows you how the spices are built up and why the pot is shaped the way it is. Mint tea arrives somewhere in the middle, poured from a height.

While the pot cooks you have the garden, then lunch on the terrace with fruit and tea. The day runs about four and a half hours, and we pick you up from Taghazout or Tamraght and bring you back to the village in the afternoon.
