About this trip
Inoumar is a village in the Anti-Atlas, south-east of Agadir, that very few visitors reach. Above it stands a citadel granary with 295 storehouses, the largest of its kind in Morocco, built so that families could keep grain and valuables safe.
The drive takes about an hour and a half. We walk into the old village first, looking at the traditional houses and the underground cisterns that collect and hold rainwater in a country where it does not rain often. Then the climb on foot to the granary itself, where the keeper meets us.
There is tea, and then a guided walk through the storehouses and the passageways between them. Afterward we go to a neighbouring village for lunch with a local family. It is a quiet area, and the day is about seeing how people live here rather than ticking off sights.
