The experience
About this trip
Essaouira does not look like Agadir. It is white and blue rather than concrete and glass, it takes the wind head-on, and the old town is still ringed by the ramparts that were built to keep ships out. The road from Agadir runs about three hours, and on the way you pass the argan scrub where the goats stand in the branches.
Once you are through the gate the day is yours. The medina is a UNESCO site and small enough to cover on foot: walk the sea wall, watch the catch come in at the harbour, look into the thuya workshops where the wood is cut and inlaid, and eat grilled fish by the boats if you are hungry. Five hours is enough for all of it at an easy pace.
The wind is real, so bring a layer even in summer. Your driver handles the road, gives you a short orientation when you arrive, and waits at the agreed point in the late afternoon. You are back at your hotel around 19:00.
