The experience
About this trip
Most day trips from Agadir head south or east. This one goes north into the Idaoutanan mountains, and the word 'hidden' is earned — the final approach is 15 kilometres of track that only a high-clearance jeep handles, which is why the valley stays quiet.
We leave at nine and climb out of the city onto the coast road, stopping for photos where the plain opens up below. The villages on the way are pisé-built and stacked against the hillside; the guide will explain the terraces, the argan trees and how water is shared between them. After roughly two hours you reach the auberge — a traditional mountain guesthouse with a courtyard and a kitchen that has been feeding travellers for decades.
Lunch is served first: salad, tagine or couscous, fruit, mint tea, all included. Then a fifteen-minute walk through palms, oleander and olive trees down to the natural pools — cold, clear water held in rock basins under the canopy. Swim, sit on the flat stones, do nothing. We start back around 16:00 and are at your hotel by 18:00.
